The Editorial Lab
Before
In my opinion I think that the city was very, very big and it was basically kind of overwhelming to Maria who had arrived there for the first time , and she felt small.
After
Why this change?
Unnecessary words
“In my opinion” and “I think” say the same thing — and the narrator's view is already implied.
Weak verb + repetition
“Sprawled” carries size and shape in one active verb, replacing “was very, very big”.
Hedging
Hedges weaken the claim. Trust the reader to feel it.
Unclear phrasing + punctuation
Restructured for rhythm; fixed the stray space before the comma.
Repetition
Shared subject lets the sentence end cleanly on its strongest image.
